Winter
Hard and slippery surfaces
Prevent from snow to get under the hooves
Winter conditions mostly give hard and slippery surfaces for the horse to walk on. Snow, ice and frozen ground are the factors that you have to participate on. The first step to prevent slipping is adding 2 widia pins to the heels of the front and hind shoes.
Use of additional products like widia pins, ice studs and snow pads are often inevitable, depending on how heavy the conditions are.
Advice
If you are facing more severe winter conditions, you could add stud holes to provide options so that you are able to add ice studs for more grip when needed. In snow-secure regions we advise you to use 4 widia pins on one shoe (2 in the toe section and 2 in the heels). To prevent snow / ice balls forming under the hoof, the use of snow pads is recommended.
